Screen Yorkshire: Backing the Northern Film Sector

Screen Yorkshire has played a major role in driving growth into the screen industries within our region by creating an environment that encourages and nurtures talent through our innovative training and development programmes. In this article we take a look at just two of our range of  programmes.

CONNECTED CAMPUS is our ground-breaking initiative forging closer links between TV and Film professionals, production companies, broadcasters and the students trying to break into this competitive industry. By fostering relationships between employers and educators, the aim is to ensure that students on a variety of vocational Film and TV-related courses are fully equipped for the demands of a contemporary, rapidly-changing industry.

All students at partner institutions can access a range of boot camps, masterclasses and special events, including visits to sets and studios, industry workshops, visiting speakers and project pitches.

BEYOND BRONTES: The Mayor’s Screen Diversity Programme , has assisted in training more than 200 trainees with many going on to work within high-profile screen productions such as The Witcher and Gentleman Jack. The programme encompasses a full training curriculum on production, post-production, and distribution that introduces  participants to diverse pathways in the industry.

Successful applicants take part in a training package from idea development to post-production and distribution, acquainting  them with a wide range of roles, from research, story-telling, development, production office and editing – to on-set crew roles, working in departments like locations, costume, hair and make-up, art department, production department, script supervision, lighting, camera and sound.

The training programme includes industry masterclasses and practical workshops under the guidance of industry mentors; CV and interview advice and workshops; tips on working as a freelancer, including finance and networking advice, and set etiquette training.

We support participants with finding their first job or placement in the screen industries with 1-2-1 skills assessments and career advice and practical help to secure entry level employment in the screen industries.

Both the Connected Campus and Beyond Brontës programme, continue to grow and produce high quality candidates. Through this work we aim to ensure there will always be budding talent available as new productions arrive in Yorkshire.
