Temple Newsam House captures over 500 years of history. It is one of the finest historic houses in the region, with a rich history of links to royalty through plots and intrigue. Uncover the stories of the people who lived here, including the notorious Lord Darnley and how generations of one family developed the house over 300 years. Over 40 interiors now display one of the most important collections of fine and decorative arts in Britain which were designated as being of pre-eminent importance in 1997: the first country house to be recognised in this way. It is a treasure house of outstanding collections including furniture, ceramics, textiles, silver and wallpaper.
The collection has been built up since 1923 when the estate was bought from the Hon. Edward Wood (later the Earl of Halifax) by the city of Leeds and developed as a country house museum, to restore the house and its fine collections to its earlier glory. Despite the sale of many of the furnishings in 1922, the basis of the contents of Temple Newsam House today is still the family collection. This has been added to over the years and now makes up one of the finest publicly owned collections of English decorative art outside London.
At Temple Newsam you can roam over 1,500 acres of stunning woodland, parkland and gardens landscaped by the famous 18th century gardener Capability Brown. Enjoy a picnic in the lakeside gardens, or the scent of roses in the romantic Georgian walled garden. See national plant collections, stunning herbaceous borders and striking seasonal displays in the glasshouse.
Many of the interior rooms show Georgian furniture and decorations, making it a perfect location for Gentleman Jack, which filmed there for series 2. The Chinese Drawing Room, The Georgian Library and Mr Woods Library (pictured below) were all used and can be seen on a visit to the house.
