YORKSHIRE CENTRE STAGE AS THIS IS ENGLAND TAKES BEST BRITISH FILM (11/02/2008)
Yorkshire's world-class film industry was in the spotlight last night as Sheffield-based Warp Films' production of This Is England won Best British Film at the BAFTA awards ceremony.
This Is England, which shot partly in Grimsby with support from Screen Yorkshire's Production Fund, features an outstanding performance from local youngster Thomas Turgoose as a 12 year old loner who falls in with a gang of skinheads. The award is the latest fantastic news for director Shane Meadows and Producer Mark Herbert, who have picked up multiple awards and received critical acclaim for their film, released last year.
Warp Films also took the award for Best Short Film for Dog Altogether, written and directed by Paddy Considine and produced by Diarmid Scrimshaw. Atonement, which used Grimsby Docks to double as Dunkirk, was named as Best Film.
Hugo Heppell, Head of Production at Screen Yorkshire and executive producer on This Is England says:
‘'Competition at the Awards this year was fierce, and it is a tribute to Mark Herbert at Warp, Shane Meadows and everyone involved that This Is England beat films such as 'Control', 'The Bourne Ultimatum' and 'Eastern Promises' to take Best British Film.''
Screen Yorkshire invested in This Is England through its Production Fund, which is supported by Yorkshire Forward and aims to develop a long-term and successful production sector in the region. Screen Yorkshire is also a key partner in Warp X, the national low budget feature film slate, whose first two films Donkey Punch and A Complete History of My Sexual Failures have recently gone down a storm with critics at the Sundance film festival in Utah.
