Educating through film
Educating, informing and developing film audiences benefits our society and our industry. Creating a hunger and passion for screen content enriches lives and creates the audiences and practitioners of the future. Understanding and enjoying film can bring societies together through better cultural understanding and media literacy is vital for young people to understand and navigate their way through today's world. Screen Yorkshire supports both one off participatory education projects and annual film festivals for children, for example, Yorkshire is home to two of the nations premiere children's festivals, Showcomotion in Sheffield and the Leeds Young People's Film Festival. Mediabox - Funding Available
Mediabox, the fund that brings hard to reach 13-19 year olds together from diverse backgrounds to work together creatively on media projects from film and radio to games and other interactive media, is taking applications with a total of £8.25million of funding available nationwide over 2 years.
Work Inspiration: ITV Work Placements for 14 - 17 year olds
ITV will be running an exciting new work placement scheme for under 18's during May and June 2010. Work Inspiration will give 14 - 17 year olds the opportunity to have a one or two week placement with ITV, in London, Manchester or Leeds. The programme is part of a national scheme organised by Business in the Community (BITC), which is challenging businesses across the UK to support and inspire the next generation of talent.
Co-op Young Filmmakers' Festival
The Co-operative is calling for budding young movie makers who dream of changing the world, to submit short films to The Co-operative Film Festival. Youngsters, aged 19 and under, have until Friday, 28 May to get their entries in for the prestigious Festival, formerly known as the Co-operative Young Film Makers Festival. It will be held at Bradford's award-winning National Media Museum on Thursday, 7 and Friday, 8 October 2010.

First Light - Filmmaking for 5-19 year olds
First Light Movies is the UK's leading filmmaking initiative for 5-19 year olds. National Lottery grants of up to £30,000 are available for organisations to make up to 4 short films with groups of disadvantaged young people. The Learning Revolution goes North with DiGi50+
Rurally isolated areas of North Yorkshire will soon benefit from part of a £97,500 investment from the Government as part of a ‘learning for pleasure' innovation spearheaded by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. DiGi 50+ is a programme of workshops and drop-in sessions devised to combat issues of social exclusion and rural isolation for older people, with North Yorkshire chosen as one fo three areas for the project delivery.
IdeasTap Launches Ideas Fund Shorts
IdeasTap has launched Ideas Fund Shorts, £40,000-worth of hassle-free funding to help young people realise short film projects. Recognising the wealth of talented young filmmakers in the UK, IdeasTap is offering eight awards of £5,000 each for the most original, engaging ideas. Entries must be for films made by 16-25-yr-olds and no longer than five minutes.
Film Education Pilot
Screen Yorkshire is working to develop media and film education and media literacy in line with the strategies laid out in the recently published UK Wide Film Education Strategy Film: 21st Century Literacy. We are delivering a Film Education Pilot which will build capacity and support the ongoing use of regional archive footage.
How we support the sector
Screen Yorkshire not only funds film education projects but invests heavily in the region's independent cinema infrastructure to ensure all communities have access to a wide range of diverse films. The Showroom in Sheffield, National Media Museum in Bradford and Pocklington Arts Centre are just a few of the independent cinemas in the county which are exhibiting film from around the world of all genres. Film Festival Calendar 2010
Our region hosts a number of leading festivals in their fields drawing in experts and enthusiasts from across the UK to celebrate, enjoy, discuss, and develop everything from animation to documentary and silent film. Sheffield Doc/Fest, Leeds International Film Festival and Bradford Animation Festival are just a few of the festivals Screen Yorkshire funds and supports.
JOHN HURT HEADS ALL STAR LINEUP AT BIFF 2010
Bradford International Film Festival has announced that it will be presenting John Hurt with its annual Lifetime Achievement Award at the 16th edition of the Festival, which takes place 18 - 28 March 2010 at the National Media Museum and venues across Bradford and Yorkshire. John Hurt will be attending the Festival to receive the award, take part in a live on-stage screentalk interview at the National Media Museum and also to host a retrospective of his work.
Sheffield Adventure Film Festival: 12 - 14 March 2010
Sheffield Adventure Film Festival (ShAFF), now in its fifth year, presents a weekend of the best in adventure film from across the globe. Featuring 44 films altogether, including 24 premieres, ShAFF includes climbing, snow sports, biking, water sports and urban outdoor pursuits all breathtakingly caught on camera by daring filmmakers.
Lovebytes: January - June 2010
Lovebytes returns in January 2010 with a cultural festival for the digital age; a season of extraordinary events taking place at some of Sheffield's landmark venues and public spaces. With the theme of 'digital craft' the programme includes a new exhibition at the Millennium Gallery, an evening of spectacular sound and light installations in the Winter Garden and an extensive programme of creative activities and workshops for people of all ages.
Glimmer 2010 dates announced
The 8th edition of Glimmer: The Hull International Short Film Festival will take place from 19 -25 April 2010 and, once again, is inviting filmmakers to take part in the biggest short film festival in the North of England. During its 7th edition - it's most successful ever - Glimmer screened in excess of 200 films, more than 50 of which were premieres, from across the world and awarded more than £2000 of prize money to filmmakers.Preserving our heritageYorkshire Film Archive
Throughout education and exhibition Screen Yorkshire works closely with the Yorkshire Film Archive to ensure its 100 years of Yorkshire film is accessed, and enjoyed across all communities. Screen Yorkshire is also working with the archive to commercially exploit this resource to secure additional revenue streams.
