Case StudyBBC Innovation Labs

TV ON BEACH

In the past two years Screen Yorkshire partnered with the BBC to be one of the first regions to pilot the BBC's Innovation Labs, a series of events bringing together BBC Commissioners and regional digital
media companies to develop and commission innovative new products and services for the BBC.

Interactive media companies from Yorkshire are invited to pitch ideas in response to a series of briefs from commissioners across the BBC. Ten companies are then invited to a week long residential Innovation Lab, working with BBC developers and other industry experts to develop their ideas into concept prototypes.

The Labs conclude with an opportunity for the prototypes to be pitched to BBC commissioners, who are then offered further development commissions for the best ideas at each Lab.

In 2006/07 Sheffield-based interactive media company DESQ, took part in Innovations Labs. David Squire, Managing Director said: "To have the luxury of time out of the office to develop creative ideas with BBC developers was of great benefit to our business. Understanding what commissioners are looking for and making those contacts is incredibly valuable and I'm grateful to Screen Yorkshire for bringing Innovation Labs to the region."
