New Year, New Resolutions
2008
Can't believe it's finally here. Time is going way too quick. I was hoping this time last year, that this time this year I would hopefully have had at least one piece of work commissioned. But alas, things are not so. Granted there has been some progress - managed to finish the MA, got some work on a Bollywood flick, made some great contacts at the BBC and not forgetting the recent involvement with Screen Yorkshire - without which none of you would be reading this. But this isn't a time for a pat on the back. This is a time to investigate what went wrong.
Mistake 1 - Multitasking and Misprioritising
Indefinitely my worst habit - taking on too much and prioritising the fun work above the necessary work. Never a good idea. If I hadn't taken up a full-time job in Manchester and a group script project at the same time as the last two months of the MA, I probably would have got a better mark. Brains!
Lesson learned - don't take on more than you can chew, and NEVER leave everything until the end for 'last minute inspiration'.
Mistake 2 - Routine
The last three months was about getting trained to the max but now that the money situation is looking pretty bleak, it's about time to look for a job - any job. To be honest, this isn't a bad thing. Though I've picked up quite a few skills, a lack of any kind of routine has led to much less than could have been. No routine exercise, no routine bed time, no routine eat time.... not good.
Lesson learned - self-discipline and shooting down procrastination will get a lot more of a result, and maybe even a six-pack.
Mistake 3 - Taking Chances
2007 was a fantastic year for contacts, both in terms of people to work with and people to send work to. Out of the grand total of 6 people I sent out work to, I got some interest from a good 4 of them. I only applied to 2 short film competitions. Idiot.
Lesson learned - the perfect script doesn't exist, use ALL your contacts and apply to a lot more competitions. Time to get out there more.
Resolution List
Stop procrastinating
Prioritise tasks
Get a routine
Send work out even if it's not perfect
Paint a fence
Use your contacts
Make more films
Stop leaving things to the last minute
Train with a wise master
SELF-DISCIPLINE!
Here's to 2008. May you all get closer to your dreams. May I actually follow my resolutions this year.
